Here Comes the Groom

‘Hello!’ I said, kissing my long lost love hello.

‘How’s my girl?’ He said, kissing me back.

This boy, well, actually he’s more of a man now. This man can’t really be categorised as a dog breed, or a name, or an anything. He was the first person I really fell in love with. Oh god, I loved him so much. We were so young though, and I was quite stupid at the time. Still a virgin, still didn’t know what I wanted from anyone. Our relationship was quite immature, we were such good friends that we decided not to ruin it by dating. Still, we would sleep at each other’s places all the time, and he was the first boy I consistently shared a bed with. I was madly in love with him, but scared that it wouldn’t be reciprocated, so I never tried it on with him.

Long story short it carried on for way too long until one day he pulled another girl and I got angry and he said, ‘You know, you can’t get mad every time I look at another girl.’

At which point I said, ‘You know what, I’m not your girlfriend, I don’t want to be your girlfriend, and right now I don’t even want to be your friend.’ Which essentially ended any kind of intimate relationship we had.

We eventually reconciled and became best friends again, but in between him and I fighting and us becoming friends again he started dating a lovely girl.

A couple of days ago we were sat together in a pub having a pint.

‘How are things?’ He asked.

‘Ah, well, same old, really.’ I said, not wanting to get into it with him. ‘How are you? Married yet? Kids? What’s new?’

He laughed nervously and took a sip of his pint. My smile faded. ‘Actually that’s one of the reasons I called.’

‘Oh my God.’ I said, with a serious look on my face. ‘You’re pregnant, aren’t you? … Is it mine?!’

He laughed again and looked me in the eyes. His eyes were a shade of blue I can’t even describe. It was as if you were looking into the depths of the Caribbean sea. I stared back. ‘I wanted to tell you that I asked [his girlfriend’s name here] to marry me.’ My expression didn’t change. ‘… And she said yes.’

I raised my eyebrows, and tried to force my mouth to follow in my “happy excitement.” It eventually did and I managed to spurt out, ‘Congratulations!’

He smiled, relieved. ‘I’m really happy.’

‘Me too,’ I lied. ‘I’m very, very happy for you.’ That part was true. ‘That’s great!’ I said, laughing.

‘The wedding is this summer.’

‘Wow!’ I said, shocked. ‘That’s … soon.’

‘Yeah, well she wanted to do it this summer.’

‘Of course.’ I said, trying to absorb the shock.

‘Please tell me you’ll come.’

‘I wouldn’t miss it for the world.’ I said, forcing a smile. ‘I’ll be right back, I need the loo.’

I walked away from the table, my eyes burning as I forced myself not to cry. In the back of my mind I had always thought that I would end up with this boy. There’s no one like your first love. I had never really stopped loving him, but when he started dating his now fiancé I knew I had lost him forever. Being the precursor to someone’s everything isn’t the best feeling in the world though.

I didn’t actually need the loo. I walked up to the bar and looked at what they had behind the bar Champagne-wise.

‘Can I help you?’ The barmaid asked.

‘I would like to buy a bottle of sparkling.’

‘Oh, well we have a lovely selection.’ She said, pulling out a wine list.

‘I’ll have this one please.’ I said, pointing at the Champagne I knew he liked.

‘Lovely choice.’

I smiled and carried the bottle and two glasses back out to the table. I smiled and held them up, ‘Congratulations!’ I said.

He laughed. ‘That’s why I love you. You’re the best.’

I smiled and placed them on the table before sitting down again. ‘I better get a plus one.’

‘Love, you can have a plus five if you’d like.’

‘Is that so?’ I asked, pouring us two glasses.

‘When it comes to you, you can have anything. You know that.’

Almost anything. ‘Cheers,’ I said, holding the glass up. ‘To you.’

‘To you!’ He said, clinking his glass to mine.

‘To the bride.’ I said, sipping my drink.

‘To the bride.’ He agreed.
